New pic2shop lets any app or web app read barcodes for free

This is a scoop for iPhoneFlow readers!

The new pic2shop app provides a custom URL mechanism with callback that lets any app (or web app) use pic2shop as a barcode reader.

pic2shop is a free comparison shopping app, that first one (in April) capable of reading UPCs and EANs. The new version is at least as fast and accurate as some paid app that has been hugely successful lately.

Now, any developer can barcode-enable their app without having to purchase a license or ask anyone permission. Because pic2shop is very lightweight and fast, the whole process (openURL+scan+openURL) takes only a few seconds.

All the information and an Xcode sample project are on the pic2shop developers' page.

Of course, the barcode reader library that powers pic2shop is still available for licensing. See Vision Smarts' web site for more info.

Pricecheckah is better. It uses the great redlaser barcode scanner, but gives you results from Amazon, eBay, walmart, overstock, buy.com as well as Google. It even let's you put in your own stores.

And at only 99c.
